Other AI tools in LAUSD contracts

What LAUSD says about this list

The district calls this list non-exhaustive. It is built from what vendors disclose about their own products, so it may leave out tools that schools or individual staff got directly, whether free or paid.

    The report also says:

    • Vendors can add, change, or turn on AI features after a product has passed district review, and features can vary by version, license, user role, age, or admin settings.
    • Approving an app does not necessarily mean approving every AI feature the vendor adds later.
    • Web filtering sorts sites by their main purpose, so it may not catch AI features built into an otherwise-approved app.
    • Platforms whose main purpose is generative AI are generally blocked for students unless they have been reviewed and approved, for example through PoDS.
    • District Chromebooks get the strictest filtering. Windows, iPad, and Mac devices are still being moved to the same model and currently get baseline CIPA-compliant filtering.

How apps get approved: the PoDS review

Before a digital instructional tool can be used in Pre-K–12, vendors must complete Procurement of Digital Solutions (PoDS) review, formerly called UDIPP. The review covers nine areas:

    1. Instructional Use (Division of Instruction)
    2. Artificial Intelligence (DOI-AI)
    3. Single Sign-On Integration (ITS)
    4. Learning Management System Integration (ITS)
    5. Security Level 1 (ITS)
    6. Security Level 2 (ITS)
    7. Security Level 3 (ITS)
    8. Data Use and Related Protocols (Office of Data and Accountability)
    9. Accessibility / 508 Compliance (Office of the General Counsel)

When a vendor reports a generative AI component, the review also looks at how the AI is trained, which models and datasets it uses, data collection and storage, privacy and security, third-party data sharing, consent, and data lifecycle.

    Questions worth asking

    • How often does LAUSD re-review approved apps for newly added AI features, and who does it?
    • Which AI features in these apps are turned on for students, and at what ages?
    • How are families told when a classroom app adds generative AI?
    • How many AI-enabled tools are in use at school sites without going through PoDS?
